MMMup – Brainstorming plugin improvements

The Moodle-Mahara Meetup in Adelaide on 8 May 2013 was the perfect setting to talk with users of Mahara and Moodle about a plugin that is frequently used by those that have both platforms. Though we have the Mahara community forums, getting the opportunity to chat with users face-to-face is fantastic because everything is done in real time.

Back in 2012 Catalyst was asked to provide specifications for expanding the Mahara assignment submission plugin to account for the deprecation of MNet by Moodle sometime in the future and to allow for keeping submitted portfolios for accountability in case a student challenged a grade. All other functionality was supposed to stay. Since then a number of functionalities have changed in Moodle and Mahara. Thus hearing what users would like to see today is important for keeping the plugin relevant.

Altogether there were 18 users of Moodle and Mahara in my workshop on the Mahara assignment submission plugin. These came primarily from the tertiary education sector from Australia and New Zealand. But we also had a participant from Fiji and one from the secondary school level. Interestingly, only two of these 18 have used the plugin in question before. However, this did not pose a difficulty because then they were not limited by the current functionality, but could think very freely about what they would like to see in the plugin.

I split the large group into three smaller ones and allowed them time to talk to each other about what they would like to see and discuss their ideas in their groups after having had a quick introduction round. This part of the workshop was important to me so we had a basis for our discussions. We all didn’t know each other besides sometimes having engaged in the online forums. That’s why the introductions were the opportunity for us to put context around where we were coming from.

All three groups had lively discussions and came up with numerous ideas for the future Mahara assignment submission plugin. During the final big group discussion, every group put forward their top ideas which we captured on the whiteboard:

  • Group submissions of assignments as is now possible in the Moodle assignment. This would be ideal with the setting up of Moodle groups / groupings automatically in Mahara.
  • Display Moodle assignments in Mahara as well as the results.
  • Submit an entire collection and not just individual pages.
  • Have the choice to lock a page when it is being submitted; allow for re-submitting of Mahara pages / collections. I.e. allow for more formative and not only summative assessment. Submitting a Mahara page / collection could mean just to submit for the teacher to give feedback, but that doesn’t mean the page would need to be locked.
  • Keep a snapshot for accountability like with other assignments that need to be archived. Potentially have options of what to keep.
  • Allow for versioning of pages / collections in Mahara.
  • Submit a page / collection to Moodle directly from within Mahara so students don’t have to go to the assignment in Moodle first, but can click a button in Mahara.

We also had a few ideas that were not directly related to the assignment submission plugin:

  • Have chat functionality in Mahara. This is already a wishlist item on Launchpad.
  • Trigger for giving feedback.
  • Have more options where Moodle content ends up in Mahara when it is being exported.

Now we’ll just need the funding to implement changes and new features. :-) Mahara is an open source project and while everyone can take its source code and run with it, there are costs involved for developing the software further be it by institutions themselves or through providing funding to have Mahara developers perform the task.

If you have further ideas or want to expand on some of the ones listed above, please join the discussion.

    • Hi, Ana, if it works for you, I’d love to have you in the course! Check the utievrsiny for . There is no extra online fee and no fee for applying for non-degree status. The cost for applicants with an Idaho address is $293 per credit hour. It’s a 3-hour course. We are working now on providing this course with no extra charge for non-residents, so stay tuned! You can get more specific class information from the course . Later, I’ll be offering a commercial version of the course for people who don’t need credit, so email me if you’d be interested in updates on that.

    • Interesting. We’ve been experimenting with using Databases for stnriog SOWs and Session Plans and when used it works well. The challenge is getting tutors to change their approach to planning and storage.Don’t know if you’ve checked the Learning Score’ but this could tie in nicely as you can export session plans with this great piece of software. Will definitely be attending this

  6. By seeing the positive aspects it is really very easy to get dependent on a particular security system but to think about the other side, it is really very difficult. For support turn to Kaspersky tech support experts, who can present reliable support for all security products released under the Kaspersky brand. They work as an effective deterrent and they are useful in the event a crime has been committed because they provide detailed footage of the event.

    • For me this is a relatively easy quositen, but has a pretty complex answer. The specialty I have actually looked forward to working with is OB/GYN. I find that the ability of a woman’s body to produce a child, endure the amount of abuse it takes during a pregnancy, and the amount of pain endured during delivery is amazing. The joy of being able to be present as life enters the world is truly one of the greatest moments in life. To me that would be the best possible option. I also would love working in the operating room with a surgeon. I have experienced the OR quite a few times, and have been on both sides of the table. I have to say I would love to work with any surgeon in the OR except for Orthopedics. The reason behind that is the surgery’s are pretty brutal when it comes to the skeletal system. Having been in the OR with an Orthopedic surgeon and seeing the use of the saws, hammers and other heavy equipment in order to perform the surgery just sends chills up my spine. I know that type of surgery is not for me. I think my favorite surgeries have to be that of the abdominal cavity. The specialties that I would least like to work for are few, and for simple reasons. Pediatrics is not a specialty for me since I have four children of my own. My Aunt is a neonatal nurse practitioner and I followed her in high school and saw the good, the bad, and the ugly so I can honestly say I could not emotionally handle that type of position. Podiatry is also an area I could not see myself working. The reason behind this is pretty silly, but here goes, I very much dislike other peoples feet especially if they are not well kept. I know in the medical field you will encounter feet on a daily basis, but I could not mainly work with feet on an everyday basis. My last specialty is Orthopedics for the reasons I noted above about the barbaric nature of the surgeries and treatments for the musculoskeletal system. Its just not for me.

  7. I do not know if it’s just me or if everybody else
encountering problems with your blog. It appears like some of the text on your
content are running off the screen. Can someone else please
provide feedback and let me know if this is happening to
them too? This might be a problem with my web browser because
I’ve had this happen before. Cheers

    • Great to learn your views on openness. For raeresch to be open. Yes, I agree. people will only give honest feedback if they can do so anonymously. I think this assumption has got solid groundings. I had conducted various surveys in the past in the 90s, in 2003, and this year and it was found to be valid in all cases. It would be interesting to verify this assumption using meta-research data though.People would generally feel easier/less risky in a closed learning or raeresch environment. Why risking ourselves in public if there are implications on what we say, write or express in open space or media? there may be something incredibly valuable in being in that position of feeling that pressure/risk. It might drive you in useful directions. Yes, that may be the benefit.Frances mentioned in her response to a blog post: All of us should think very carefully about how we construct our online identities, remembering that this could become part of a future professional identity So being fully open has a price to pay too. What motivate people to become fully open in networks? Thanks for your thought provoking post.John

    • Thanks for comment I am ainmig at the the Moodle course *actually being* the SOW etc. One of the, not unreasonable, objections of slow adopters is the extra work involved in course creation. This can be reduced or at least offset if the course can be recycled as SOW etc. There is also a quality gain from the authenticity that comes from the Moodle session being close to what is actually delivered, rather than a plan-for-its-own-sake as so many session plans are.

  12. My partner and I absolutely love your blog and find most of your post’s to be precisely what I’m looking for. Would you offer guest writers to write content in your case? I wouldn’t mind producing a post or elaborating on a few of the subjects you write concerning here. Again, awesome blog!

    • A psychiatrist is a pasciyihn who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. I have a bachelor’s degree in the social services field. For several years, I have worked with children who have been diagnosed with mental disorders. It is upsetting to see children victimize at an early age and even more disturbing to see them as predators as early as 5 years of age, however knowing that I am doing my part to assist them in becoming functioning youths and adults is rewarding. The empathy, confidentiality and maturity of a medical assistant are definitely needed in this area. I enjoy establishing a rapport with these clients and helping them to find adequate coping skills to deal with their disorders, therefore I would like to work for a psychiatrist.I would not like to work for an emergency pasciyihn for several reasons. I will explain a few. Patients who come to the emergency center typically have serious injuries or trauma. I would not like to have my mind constantly focused on who is coming thru the door and how sever the prognosis is. Knowing myself, I know that would be my focus and I would not be very productive. Also, in the emergency room the staff has to be prepared for anything, I would prefer an area that focuses on a particular specialty. Most importantly, I do not wish to see excessive amounts of blood loss on a regular basis. Actually, not even a minimal amount of blood loss on a regular basis. Giving my opinion and thoughts about this specialty, I would not be an effective employee.
