Moving to a new place always entails a lot of changes. One of them is the telephone provider. Fortunately, I had internet access at my new home from the beginning as it is included in the rent. So I could always make phone calls via the computer, but the quality was lacking and I could not be reached so easily. At the moment (and maybe for a long time) it is not possible to have individual land lines in your house. Therefore, I had to look into the mobile phone options. After I found a provider which was not so difficult in Luxembourg as there are basically only two to choose from that have good plans and even no monthly base fee, the idiosynchrasies started.

I went to the company’s store in the city center and received the following information: If I already have a phone, I would only need to bring in

• an identity card / passport
• a bank statement where my bank account number is shown.

As I did not have a bank statement with me and no phone yet, I took all the information on the plan and went home. At home I read everything carefully and discovered that there was a store on my way to the university where I could also sign up with that phone company. So I thought, alright, go there when you have the phone. (If I had wanted to get a new phone, I would have needed a salary statement on top of everything.)

Yesterday I got the phone, went to the store after work and discovered that

• I did not only need my passport and
• my bank statement but also
• my work permit / temporary work permit / card that I work and
• the salary statement of the previous month.

Well, as I was only able to sign my work contract two days ago and am still waiting to receive my student ID number which I need to go through the entire work permit stuff, I did not have that card yet. I left the store without a telephone number.

However, I remembered, that the city store sales clerk had told me different things and that’s why I went there today. There was a different sales clerk in the store today and of course, he told me something different again. I could get a SIM card with him if I provided

• an identity card,
• a Luxembourgish bank account or any credit card and
• an official statement of where I live.

Hurray, that’s what I could give him. Within a few minutes we had completed the paperwork, I could choose my phone number, and received my first ever SIM card.

The telephone works and I can be reached.

Wenn man umzieht, bringt das eine Menge Veränderungen mit sich. Eine davon ist der Telefonanbieter. Glücklicherweise hatte ich von Anfang an Internetzugang in meinem neuen Zuhause, da er im Mietpreis inbegriffen ist. So konnte ich Telefonanrufe per Computer tätigen, aber die Qualität war nicht so gut und ich konnte nicht leicht erreicht werden. Zur Zeit (und wahrscheinlich auch auf längere Sicht) ist es nicht möglich, für uns einzelne Telefonleitungen ins Haus zu legen. Deshalb musste ich mich um ein Mobiltelefon kümmern. Nachdem ich einen Anbieter gefunden hatte, was in Luxembourg nicht so schwierig ist, da man im Prinzip nur zwischen 2 auswählen kann, die kostengünstig sind, fing alles erst richtig an.

Ich ging zu dem Telefonladen in der Innenstadt und erhielt folgende Informationen. Wenn ich schon ein Telefon habe, bräuchte ich nur noch

• einen Ausweis und
• einen Kontoauszug, wo die Bankverbindung drauf steht.

Da ich keinen Kontoauszug dabei hatte und auch noch kein Telefon, nahm ich alle Informationen mit nach Hause und las mir dort alles durch. Dabei entdeckte ich, dass ich auch auf dem Weg zur Uni in einem Computerladen den Vertrag abschließen konnte. Also nahm ich mir das für den Tag vor, an dem ich ein Telefon haben würde. (Wenn ich ein neues Telefon mit zum Vertrag haben wollte, hätte ich einen Gehaltsauszug mitbringen müssen, den ich nicht hatte.)

Gestern bekam ich ein Telefon, ging nach der Arbeit zu dem Laden und erfuhr Folgendes:

• Ich benötigte nicht nur meinen Ausweis und
• meine Kontoverbindung, sondern auch noch
• meine Arbeitserlaubnis / temporäre Arbeitserlaubnis / Karte, auf der drauf steht, dass ich in Luxembourg arbeite und
• den Gehaltsauszug vom letzten Monat.

Nun, da ich erst am Donnerstag meinen Arbeitsvertrag unterschreiben konnte und immer noch auf meine Matrikelnummer warte, die ich benötige, um meinen Arbeitserlaubnisbehördengang zu machen, hatte ich natürlich diese Karte noch nicht. Ich ging also wieder ohne Telefonnummer aus dem Laden.

Allerdings erinnerte ich mich an die Verkäuferin in dem Laden in der Stadt, die mir etwas anderes erzählt hatte. Deshalb ging ich heute noch einmal dorthin. Es war ein anderer Verkäufer da und der erzählte mir natürlich wieder etwas anderes. Bei ihm konnte ich eine SIM-Karte für das Telefon bekommen, wenn ich

• einen Ausweis,
• ein Luxembourgisches Konto oder irgendeine Kreditkarte und
• ein offizielles Dokument über meinen Wohnort in Luxembourg vorlegen könnte.

Yippie! All das konnte ich ihm geben. Innerhalb weniger Minuten hatten wir den Papierkram hinter uns, ich konnte meine Telefonnummer wählen und erhielt die erste SIM-Karte meines Lebens.

Das Telefon funktioniert und ich bin erreichbar.
