“Terms of Use” or “Privacy Policy” are usually the documents one tries to avoid on a website because they are written in legalese that is boring. Besides that, we all know that we should not upload certain things on websites etc. However, since I wanted to find out something on Slideshare, I did venture off into its “Terms of Use” and found the following text:

“Under no circumstances shall SlideShare or its licensors be held liable for any delay or failure in performance resulting directly or indirectly from acts of nature, forces, or causes beyond its reasonable control, including, without limitation, Internet failures, computer equipment failures, telecommunication equipment failures, other equipment failures, electrical power failures, strikes, labor disputes, riots, insurrections, civil disturbances, shortages of labor or materials, fires, floods, storms, explosions, acts of God, war, governmental actions, orders of domestic or foreign courts or tribunals, non-performance of third parties, or loss of or fluctuations in heat, light, or air conditioning.” (emphasis by me)

It’s quite astonishing that they put “acts of God” in. I haven’t done a study on other “Terms of Use”, but was truely amazed. Everything seems to be covered in these “Terms of Use”.

Die Seite mit den AGB ist gewöhnlich nicht die, die man auf einer Website versucht zu vermeiden, weil sie in der unverständlichen Juristensprache geschrieben ist. Außerdem wissen wir alle, dass wir bestimmte Dinge nicht ins Web hochladen sollten. Als ich jedoch bei Slideshare etwas herausfinden wollte, habe ich mich doch einmal auf die Seite mit den AGB gewagt. Dies ist ein Auszug aus der Seite (gibt’s nur auf Englisch, soweit ich sehen konnte, aber das macht nichts, denn das wichtige versteht man auch ohne Englischkenntnisse):

Slideshare sichert sich gegen alles ab, sogar gegen Gottesakte. Ich habe keine Untersuchung von AGB-Seiten gemacht, aber das hat mich sehr verblüfft und ich glaube nicht, dass diese Firma irgendeinen Gerichtsprozess befürchten muss mit diesen AGB.
